The Fred Whitton Challenge - all editions

Located in the stunning surroundings of the Lake District, the annual Fred Whitton Challenge ride is rightly considered as England's toughest one-day cycle sportive. 112 miles of hill and dale adds up to a mighty 3,950m of climbing and the gradients top out at a tear-inducing 30%.

The early doors ascent of Kirkstone Pass, and the 'final nail in coffin' of Hardknott Pass, are the marque climbs but it's the near constant climbing and descending of the twisty miles that makes 'The Fred' so hard. An early May date can often bring less than hospitable weather into play as well. The rigours of the ride though are rewarded with excellent organisation, the feel good factor of raising money for charity via your entry fee and riding some of the country's most scenic roads
