Taiwan KOM Challenge

The Taiwan KOM Challenge takes the simple idea of a hill climb to the extreme.

Starting at sea-level in Haulien, Taiwan, the 105 kilometre distance doesn’t sound too daunting until you realise that it’s pretty much ALL uphill.

After a flattish 20km warm up, the road tilts skywards and riders can expect an average grade of 6% for the rest of the way. The ride travels through the incredible scenery of the Taroko Gorge on it’s way to the high point of Wuling Pass but most riders will be either fixated on the wheel in front or, failing that, their own stems as they grind upwards for miles and miles.

The road only gets harder as well, with the last 10km offering much steeper ramps for those tired, tired legs. 10% quickly becomes 20% and finally tops out at 27% in the last brutal kilometre..
