The first officially recognised Hour Record was set in 1893 by Henri Desgrange - the man who would go on to create the Tour de France - covering a distance of 35.525km. Since then such luminaries as Coppi, Anquetil and Merckx held the title before it fell out of favour after the late Nineties as first doping and then restrictive rule changes chipped away at it's historic lustre.

A recent relaxation of the rules by the governing body has led to surge of new attempts, capped off most recently by Bradley Wiggins who took the Record out to 54.526 km in June 2015.

Our illustration shows all the holders of the Men's record, the best Women's mark and also the now set-aside "Absolute Records" of Boardman and Obree.
