I don't think anyone saw this one coming... Geraint Thomas winning the Tour de France!
Sure he had the strongest team in the race but his role was to be Chris Froome's super-domestique again as the Kenyan-born Brit went for his fourth Grand Tour in a row and his fifth Tour de France.
But early crashes saw Froome and others lose precious seconds and it was the Welshman who quietly rose towards the top of the GC standings by the end of the first week. Two brilliant rides in the Alpes brought wins on La Rosiere and Alpe d'Hues, propelling 'G' into the yellow jersey and an appointment with destiny.
There was always a question of staying power though. Thomas had never finished in the top 10 of a grand tour previously and both Tom Dumoulin and Primoz Roglic provided serious threats in the final week.
But Thomas did stand firm and became the third British rider to win a Grand Tour, following in the wheels of his teammates Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.
