Held in the eastern Ardennes region of Belgium, Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a very different prospect that the Spring Classics which precede it in the annual calendar. La Doyenne ("The Oldest") is the Monument that often attracts the Grand Tour contenders as well as the one-day specialists. Relentlessly undulating, Liege-Bastogne-Liege is characterised by the numerous côtes which give the route a saw-tooth profile across its entire length.

Written into modern cycling folklore by the blizzard conditions endured by winner Bernard Hinault in 1980, La Doyenne can still lay a weighty claim to being the toughest one-day race of the year. The most famous climb of La Redoute sometimes defines the race. More often it's the final named climb of Saint-Nicholas or even the ramped finish itself where, as with all the Monuments, those with the best positioning and greatest reserves of stamina will ultimately claim the prize.
