They take their one day racing very seriously in Belgium, and in Flanders in particular. To be called a "Flandrian" is cycling shorthand for being the toughest of the tough; capable of enduring the worst terrain - exposed farmland, teeth-jarring cobbles and the short, sharp climbs known locally as 'bergs' - and often in the worst weather.
The Ronde Van Vlaanderen - the Tour of Flanders - is the pinnacle of Flemish racing and is an incredible event to experience. The passion of the fans by the roadsides is only matched by the sinew bursting efforts that reduce the peloton time and time again. The race is played out against an almost medieval backdrop of baying crowds and fluttering yellow and black flags displaying the Lion of Flanders.
